Please read our white paper. Similar to other layer 2s, we are taking a conservative and controlled approach to our initial release. In many ways our approach is similar to that of Optimism (see here). We are in beta mode, with a semi-trusted security model.
There is one improvement for Nahmii versus some other layer 2s as Nahmii AS is strongly bonded to the network by the NII token value. This model was highlighted in the Plasma white paper (see here).
Improvements to performance, availability and the security model will be continuous and we are already working with a variety of partners on huge upgrades.
Transaction fees on Nahmii are charged similarly to Ethereum, in that the more complex a transaction is, the higher the gas used. Nahmii on initial release is using Ethereum as its native fee currency, but Nahmii has a fixed gas price, which reduces transaction fee volatility.
As described in the white paper, a future upgrade will eliminate all transaction fee volatility as we will allow a host of alternative fee currencies. At this point the default pricing will be USD based.

Nahmi is architected in such a way that not all code needs to be open source. All smart contracts which control the security of Nahmii will always be open source, along with any software that is to be used to interact with Nahmii.
